It was recently announced on the news that Connecticut will be ushering
in two new area codes and 10-digit dialing for all calls even it it's
across the street.
The
State Department of State Utility Control said the switch to 10-digit
dialing is necessary in advance of the state's need for new area codes.
Area code 203 is expected to run out of numbers by the middle of
2010 at which time new numbers will go into the area code 475. The 860
area code is expected to run out a year later in 2011 and new numbers
will go into the area code 959.
Starting on April 1, callers in the state will have the option of
using either the 7 or 10 digits when dialing local calls. It will
become mandatory on December 1 to use the area code for all calls.
Callers will still need to dial 1 when making toll calls only. No
calling areas, charges or rates are affected by the change.
